The Search and Rescue Transponder (SART) is an aid in locating people during a rescue operation. When leaving the ship, the SART must be taken with you, after which the SART must be hung as high as possible in the life raft. This way the signal reaches as far as possible.

The AIS SART is almost the same as the SART, with one important difference: The AIS SART has a built-in GPS.
